Summary 2

Why do men shout at women in the street?

According to Northeastern University associate professor of sociology Kathrin Zippel, men shout at women in the street to prove their masculinity.
‘Street harassment’ they call it, the members of the American ‘Hollaback’, and the new UK version: ‘Anti-Street Harassment UK’. Men whistle, catcall and even grope to women in the street, and the only way to respond to it is to ignore it. Though by ignoring the street harassment it’ll allow men to continue. That’s where the Anti-Street Harassment UK comes in. They offer women forums in which women can share their experiences, share photos of their harassers and view maps of where previous incidents have occurred.

To comment this article, I think it is good that they started an organization to help women who feel harassed by men shouting in the street. They can share their experience and maybe one day stand-up to these men. Though I still want to know why men feel the need to prove their masculinity with shouting at women in the street, why can’t they just have a spitting contest or shout at each other?

  1. I have no bloody idea why some men shout at women on the streets, but to start the Anti-street Harassment UK is a bit too much if you ask me. I am not saying it’s good what those men do, but I think lasses are strong enough to fight back themselves when necessary.

  2. I totally agree with you Sylvana sometimes you really have to wonder why they do such things. I think its good that they have started the program maybe like that women can find support from other women to help pull through the 'trauma'.. but on the other hand i think it would only be helpful if the harassment reach to the point of them being touched or raped.. because if it is only because of catcalls and whistles that they have created this Anti-street Harassment UK it is a waste of time, because most women feel flattered when they are being catcalled and there is no harm in that..
